MP Caroline Lucas Arrested in UK Cuadrilla Fracking Protest

Caroline Lucas fracking arrest

Former head of the Green Party and current MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas was among those arrested this week at the anti-fracking demonstration targeting the operations of Cuadrilla, a major UK fracking firm.

The march on the village of Balcombe, where Cuadrilla has begun exploratory drilling, drew over 2,000 protesters opposed to shale gas fracking on environmental grounds. Even before the march began, Cuadrilla suspended drilling activities, although it is suspected that they will resume shortly.

Though the protest was peaceful, arrests were made after protesters refused to allow access to a local industrial estate. Ms Lucas was among those detained. As she was led away, she told reporters:

‘Along with everyone else who took action today, I’m trying to stop a process which could cause enormous damage for decades to come. People today, myself included, took peaceful, non-violent direct action only after exhausting every other means of protest available to us.’

After her release, she took to twitter to voice her gratitude for messages of support:

The Guardian liveblogged the no frack protest, collecting tweets, photos and opinions from around the web, ideal for those who want to get the minute-by-minute story of this anti fracking protest.
